Solar Street Light for Home: Sizing, Price and Setup

A solar street light for home use is a pole-mounted fixture with its own panel and battery, sized to light a driveway, a compound or the road outside your gate. For most Indian homes a 40 W fixture on a 5 m pole is enough, and it needs no wiring, no trenching and no electricity bill.

This guide covers where a street light earns its place at home, how to size it, what it costs, and how to install it so it keeps working through the monsoon.

When a home needs a street light rather than a lamp

Garden lamps, post lights and pillar lights are built to be seen. They mark a path or a gate pier and give a space some atmosphere, but they put very little light on the ground. A street light does the opposite job: it lights a surface well enough to see who is at the gate, where the car is going and what is on the path.

A home needs one when the area is open ground rather than an edge. The usual cases are a driveway longer than a few car lengths, a parking area, a wide approach to the gate, a farmhouse yard, or the stretch of road outside the house. For the decorative layer closer to the building, see which outdoor light goes where.

How to size a solar street light for home

Size by the ground you need to cover, then by how the light will be used through the night. Three numbers decide it.

Mounting height

Mount the fixture at about 5 m. That height spreads light evenly across a driveway or compound without glare into windows, and keeps the fixture out of easy reach. Going higher does not add useful coverage; it spreads the same light thinner. More in street light pole height.

Pole spacing

Space poles at about three times the mounting height, so 12 to 15 m apart at 5 m. A 30 m driveway therefore takes three poles: one near the gate, one midway and one at the house end. Stretching the gap further leaves dark patches between bright pools.

Lumens, not watts

Judge output by lumens. Our Bat 40W gives 1,600 lumens, which suits a typical home driveway or compound. A wider yard or a longer approach suits the Bat 75W at 2,760 lumens. The full method is in how many watts you need.

Which of our street lights suits a home

FixtureOutputBatteryHome usePrice
Owl 100W1,400 lm, motion sensor10 Ah LiFePO4Gate, side passage, back yardRs. 4,999
Bat 40W1,600 lm12 Ah LiFePO4Driveway, compound, road outside the gateRs. 7,550
Bat 75W2,760 lm26 Ah LiFePO4Long driveway, farmhouse yard, parkingRs. 9,999
Bat 90W3,129 lm30 Ah LiFePO4Large compound, approach roadRs. 11,999

The Bat 40W is where most homes should start. It carries a 12 Ah LiFePO4 battery charged by a 15 W panel through an MPPT controller, and its IP65 housing is built for Indian monsoons.

The Owl 100W suits places where light is needed only when someone is there. It idles dim and rises to full output on movement, which stretches its 10 Ah battery across the night. That works well at a gate, a side passage or a yard behind the house, and it keeps a bedroom window from being lit all night.

Solar street light for home price

Our home-suited fixtures run from Rs. 4,999 for the Owl 100W to Rs. 11,999 for the Bat 90W. The pole, the foundation and the installation are quoted separately, because they depend on the ground and the height you need.

After that there is no running cost. The fixture draws nothing from the grid, so a light that burns every night costs nothing to operate. The battery is the part that ages, and LiFePO4 is rated for 8 to 12 years of service. For the wider market, see the solar street light price list.

Installing it at home

  • Give the panel full sun. It needs direct light through the middle of the day. Check the spot in winter too, because a tree that clears the panel in June can shade it for hours in December.
  • Face the panel south. In India a south-facing panel collects the most over a year. See which way a solar panel should face.
  • Keep other lights off the panel. A solar light switches on when it senses darkness, so a porch light shining on its panel can keep it off.
  • Set the pole properly. A 5 m pole needs a concrete foundation suited to the soil and the wind at your site. This is part of what we quote.
  • Let it charge first. Give a new fixture a full sunny day before its first night, so the battery starts full.

Looking after it

A home solar street light needs little attention. Clean the panel before and after the monsoon, because dust and the haze rain leaves behind cut charging more than anything else. Once a year, check that the fixture is tight on its bracket and that nothing has grown into the panel's sunlight.

The Bat range carries a 2 year warranty. The battery is the part most likely to need replacing first, and on LiFePO4 that is typically 8 to 12 years away. See maintenance of solar lights and how to clean the panel.

Mistakes we see most often

  • Lighting a driveway with garden lamps. Six low-output lamps do not add up to one fixture built to light ground.
  • Buying by watts alone. Our Owl 100W gives 1,400 lumens and our Bat 40W gives 1,600. Compare lumens, and the battery's capacity and chemistry.
  • Mounting too low. A fixture at 3 m makes a bright spot under the pole and little else.
  • Putting the panel in shade. A shaded panel is the most common reason a home solar light runs out before dawn.

Frequently asked questions

Which solar street light is best for home use?

For most homes, a 40 W fixture on a 5 m pole. Our Bat 40W gives 1,600 lumens, enough for a driveway or compound. Where light is needed only when someone moves, the Owl 100W with its motion sensor suits better.

What is the price of a solar street light for home?

Our home-suited fixtures run from Rs. 4,999 for the Owl 100W to Rs. 11,999 for the Bat 90W. The pole, foundation and installation are quoted separately for the site. There is no electricity cost afterwards.

How many solar street lights does a home driveway need?

Space poles 12 to 15 m apart at a 5 m mounting height. A 30 m driveway takes three poles. A short driveway of 10 to 12 m is usually covered by one fixture near the middle.

Does a solar street light work in the monsoon?

Yes, if the panel gets direct sun whenever there is any. Our Bat range uses LiFePO4 batteries and IP65 housings. Clean the panel before and after the monsoon to keep charging at its best.

Can I install a solar street light at home myself?

The fixture needs no wiring and mounts on a bracket. The pole is the harder part: a 5 m pole needs a concrete foundation suited to the soil and wind. We quote the pole and installation for the site.
