Outdoor Solar Lamps for Indian Homes: Types, Prices and What Each One Suits
Shinesun's editorial team writes about solar lighting based on our manufacturing, installation, and field-service experience across India.

"Solar lamp" is one of those phrases that covers half a dozen genuinely different products. A ₹1,589 pathway marker and a ₹4,499 pillar light are both solar lamps, and they do almost nothing in common. Price differences of three or four times are not markup — they are different amounts of panel, battery and light.
What follows is how we would pick, by position, with what each type actually costs.
What a solar lamp is made of, and where the money goes
Every outdoor solar lamp is four components: a photovoltaic panel, a battery, a controller and an LED, in a weatherproof housing. Nothing connects to the mains — no cable run, no trenching, no meter, no electrician. On a boundary wall or an outbuilding, that cable run is often the entire cost of the job, which is the real economic argument for solar ahead of any saving on electricity.
Price tracks panel size and battery capacity far more closely than it tracks LED wattage. Two lamps advertised at the same watts can differ substantially, and the difference is usually the cell. Ask for capacity in watt-hours, or the voltage alongside the amp-hours — amp-hours alone cannot be compared between fixtures.
Pathway and border lamps — from ₹1,589
Short stake-mounted lamps that mark the edge of a path. These are deliberately low-output: the job is to show you where the path goes, not to light the ground. A bright fixture at knee height glares straight into your eyes and destroys your night vision, which makes a path feel less safe rather than more.
Our European Prime pathway lamp is ₹1,589 for a pack of two, and the Moonlit pathway lamp ₹1,789. Spacing matters more than output: evenly spaced low lamps read as a path, while two bright ones read as two bright spots.
Garden lamps — from ₹1,849
Taller than a path marker and meant to be looked at as well as looked by. Our Edison garden lamp is ₹1,849 for a pack of two. These suit borders, planting beds and seating areas, where you want the space to feel occupied after dark rather than floodlit.
Post and pillar lamps — ₹2,499 to ₹4,499
This is where output starts to matter. A post lamp at ₹2,499 switchable between warm and cool white suits a porch, a step or a short gate post. The Opal pillar lamp at ₹4,499 and the Volcano gate and pillar lamp at ₹3,250 are built for boundary columns and gate piers.
Buy pillar lamps in pairs. A single lamp on one pier throws a shadow straight across the opening, which is the opposite of what you wanted. And be clear with yourself about whether you are marking the entrance or lighting it — those are different fixtures at different prices, and the commonest disappointment in this category is buying the first while expecting the second. Marking versus lighting goes through it.
Where a lamp stops being the answer
Driveways, parking, open compounds and any road want a pole-mounted street light, not a lamp. This is the mistake we see most often: people buy six garden lamps to light a driveway, and six low-output fixtures do not add up to one that was designed for the job. Our 100 W Owl street light starts at ₹4,499 — the same price as a pillar lamp, for a completely different amount of light. How many watts you need covers sizing.
A wall or facade you want washed with light wants a flood light at ₹6,600, which is a wide beam rather than a lamp.
Three things to check before buying any outdoor solar lamp
- Does the position get real midday sun? Walk the property around noon and look at where the panel will sit, not where the light will shine. A north-facing wall, a pillar top under a tree, a passage between two buildings — these do not work, and a larger battery cannot create charge it never received.
- What is the IP rating? IP65 is the floor outdoors in India: dust-tight and protected against water jets. Treat a lamp that states no rating at all as unrated — it is a cheap test to publish and an expensive one to fail.
- What chemistry is the battery? "Lithium" is not an answer; LiFePO4 and lithium-ion are both lithium. Compact lamps reasonably use lithium-ion, where the size and duty make it the right fit, and that gives roughly 4 to 6 years. Lead-acid needs replacing in 3 to 4. See LiFePO4 versus lithium-ion.
Everything in our range is quoted rather than carted, and all of it is two years' warranty as standard — see what that actually covers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a solar lamp in India?
Across our outdoor range, from ₹1,589 for a pack of two pathway lamps to ₹4,499 for an 18 W pillar lamp. Price tracks panel size and battery capacity much more closely than LED wattage, which is why two lamps quoting the same watts can differ substantially.
Which solar lamp is best for a home entrance?
A gate or pillar lamp, bought in pairs so neither throws a shadow across the opening. Decide first whether you want to mark the entrance or light the approach to it — those are different fixtures. For a porch or a step, a post lamp is usually enough.
Do outdoor solar lamps need wiring?
No. Each lamp carries its own panel, battery and controller, so nothing connects to the mains — no cable run, no trenching, no meter, no electrician. Most need two fixings and nothing else.
How long do solar lamps last?
The battery decides it. Compact lamps using lithium-ion give roughly 4 to 6 years, which is a fit-for-use choice at that size rather than a cut corner. LiFePO4, used in our street lights, is rated for 8 to 12 years. A lamp built on lead-acid needs its battery replaced in 3 to 4 years, and that is the hidden cost inside a lower quote.
Can solar lamps light a driveway?
Not well. Pathway and garden lamps are designed to be seen rather than to light ground, and adding more of them does not substitute for a fixture built for the job. A driveway, parking area or compound wants a pole-mounted street light — ours start at ₹4,499, the same price as a pillar lamp.
